Claude
Anthropic’s assistant — consumer accounts are for adults 18+.
Our verdict: adults only (18+)
Read the rationale below. This is not a certification, endorsement, or guarantee of safety.
- What it is
- A high-quality general AI assistant for writing, analysis, coding, and conversation — aimed at adults.
- Age guidance
- Anthropic requires users to be at least 18 to create and use a Claude consumer account. Help Centre articles describe enforcement via app-store age signals in some US states, with staged rollout. There is no parental-consent path for under-18 consumer use comparable to ChatGPT’s teen linking.
- Parent controls
- No consumer parental-controls product for children. This is an adult service. If a child somehow accesses Claude through a shared adult login, that violates the age rule and removes accountability — do not do this.
- Privacy / data (UK/EU framing)
- Anthropic publishes consumer privacy terms for adult users. Because under-18s are outside the permitted audience, we do not treat Claude as a children’s data-protection design exercise. Schools/API products are separate from the consumer app and are not covered by this page.
Why this verdict
Adults only (18+) — not “this product is unsafe,” but “this product is not for under-18s.”
Claude’s consumer terms and help documentation set a hard 18+ bar. That is clearer than many rivals. For FamilyAI Check, clarity means we do not recommend workarounds, shared logins, or “just for homework” exceptions for minors.
Stay aware
- If a school provides Claude through an organisation/API arrangement, that is a different product context — ask the school for their DPIA and age policy.
- Adult household accounts should use passwords/passkeys the children do not know.
